Best Hairstyles for Black Women 2018

When summer is coming, it brings lots of warm days, but also, ugh sweaty necks. Experiment with a new look, like a beachy wave or a braided updo that will keep you looking fresh all season long. Then when you’re ready to take a leap, try out these amazing new haircuts.

1. Micro Braids

Festival season is fast approaching and it’s time to live your best boho life by adding a couple of tiny braids to your hair. “The smaller the braid, the more delicate and refined it looks,” says Hawkins. Channel the ultimate cool girl Zoë Kravitz with this look.

2. BED HEAD CHIC: PRIYANKA CHOPRA

Is there any look that says summer more than beachy waves? Nope! Get them by spraying on some dry shampoo, running your hands through your hair, then walking out the door.

What You’ll Need: Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo, $19, amazon.com

3. BRAID HEADBAND: TYRA BANKS

Tyra’s style looks so intricate, but it’s actually incredibly easy to pull off. Just create two braids on one side of your head (your choice), then carefully place them across the top of your head. Pin them down with bobby pins (use the same color as your hair to hide them!), and you’ll have a “natural” headband in no time.

4. THE WET LOOK: ASHLEY GRAHAM

The wet hair look has been in style for the past year or so, and it’s not going anywhere this summer.

5. SLEEK AND STRAIGHT: KIM KARDASHIAN WEST

Kim’s look makes her mornings pretty effortless. The key is a reliable, high-powered straightener. Bonus tip: A 1-inch flat iron allows you to get closer to your roots to achieve a pin-straight look. Make sure to spray on some heat protective spray, so your hair is safe from damage.

What You’ll Need: TRESemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray, $5, amazon.com

6. Drop Your Pony Low

“High ponytails are moving south this summer,” says the hairstylist. It’s time to say goodbye to the braid and buns, and let the hair hang low and back. It can be sleek or textured but the low ponytail always looks classy.“Bonus points if you wrap your hair around the band.” he adds.

7. Keep It Blunt

It’s time for a chop. “Instead of a graduated, stacked, or A-line bob, we’re going to see a lot of one-length, blunt cuts,” explains Hawkins. It’s especially flattering if you have fine hair. “Use a tiny drop of hair oil to get extra shine,” he advises.

8. ALL NATURAL: VIOLA DAVIS

Summertime is the perfect time to show off your natural hair! Viola Davis rocks her bouncy curls in the best way. To achieve a look like hers, make sure to use a cleanser that contains nourishing ingredients to smooth curls and help bind them together.

What You’ll Need: SoftSheen-Carson Dark and Lovely Au Naturale Anti-Shrinkage Clumping Curl Clay Cleanser, $6, amazon.com

9. BOUNCY CURLS: KAT GRAHAM

Don’t be afraid to rock a more natural style this summer by taking full advantage of your natural curls. To keep the heat from ruining your look, work some mousse into your hair, scrunching your curls as you go.

What You’ll Need: Agadir Argan Oil Volumizing Styling Mousse, $11, amazon.com

10. THE BRAIDED PONY: JESSICA ALBA

Love braids? Then Jessica’s style might become your new go-to. Just braid the portion of your hair at the back of your neck, then wrap it into a side pony. Make it look more polished by wrapping a chunk of hair around the base.

11. IMPERFECT BOB: RIHANNA

To create the piece-y, punkish vibe Rihanna rocks with her bob, Brown says: “Start with an anti-humidity treatment. Then use a flat iron until you get to the bottom 1/3 of your hair and then at the ends, flip and turn the iron, alternating a little out and in to create the texture.”

12. THE NEW PIXIE: JENNIFER HUDSON

Jennifer’s bang-heavy pixie cut is great for those ready to commit to an all-about-your-face look.

13. THE WRAPAROUND PONY: MINDY KALING

You worked hard for that healthy, shiny hair, so show it off this season. Make a deep side part, then pull hair into a ponytail over the opposite shoulder for a balanced look.
